Lost Highways is a visceral cover band hailing from all corners of the Charlotte, North Carolina area. Formed in Denver, NC by longtime friends and former bandmates from 2 other bands (The Coming Dawn and later Diamonds & Whiskey), Lost Highways rose from the passion both Andrew Ross and Christopher McKinney had for 80s and 90’s music. Even in their former bands, idle moments in rehearsals were filled with impromptu bursts of their favorite cover tunes. Quietly starting in 2019 as little more than a fun side project, they brought in friends to jam with them at house parties and celebrations.
In the summer of 2023, the yet unnamed band started playing occasional shows publicly with temporary names (some as jokes), most notably at The Rooster in Gastonia. After a great deal of positive feedback, and demand for more shows, the band made the decision to kick into gear and take their fun little project to the masses to entertain. Lost Highways was born to create a party atmosphere to celebrate life, love, and music with the people, not just in front of them. Lost Highways has carved out a niche for themselves with their dynamic performances and eclectic repertoire. The band has quickly gained traction in the local music scene with their energetic live shows and their ability to seamlessly blend genres and make the audience a crucial part of their shows. From classic rock anthems to modern pop hits, Lost Highways holds true to the art of keeping audiences engaged and on their feet dancing all night long.
Comprised primarily of vocalist and guitarist Andrew Ross and drummer/vocalist/sound engineer Christopher McKinney, Lost Highways boasts a lineup of ultra talented musicians with a passion for delivering unforgettable performances that are unique to the band yet still true to the source material. Each member brings their own unique style and influences to the table, resulting in a diverse sound that appeals to audiences of all ages and musical preference.
With a dedication to creating a fun and engaging atmosphere, a deep catalog of hit songs from the 70s/80s/90s/2ks, and loads of musical talent with a penchant for dynamics and personal expression, Lost Highways is becoming a sought-after act for live music venues, corporate events, and festivals throughout the greater Charlotte area. Their professionalism and infectious energy have earned them a loyal and quickly growing following and a budding reputation as one of the must see cover bands in the region. Lost Highways continues to push the boundaries of their own creativity and what a cover band should be, leaving a lasting impression with each and every show.
ANDREW ROSS
Drew is a guitarist with nearly 30 years of experience, known for his electrifying performances and passion for alternative rock. His musical journey began in an unexpected way—grounded from nearly all activities due to poor grades. He picked up the guitar and found his true calling, literally learning to play his first song by ear in 2 days. Influenced by his mom’s love for music, he developed an eclectic taste, embracing rock bands from the 1950s to today.
His musical style is shaped by a diverse range of influences, including Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins, Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac, Wes Borland from Limp Bizkit, and the legendary Jimi Hendrix. These artists have inspired him to blend energy, creativity, and emotion into his own unique sound.
As an energetic frontman, Drew is known for his dynamic stage presence, captivating audiences whether he’s performing for a small group or a crowd of 10,000. His genuine enthusiasm and connection with the audience make his live shows unforgettable experiences.
Beyond the stage, Drew is a dedicated father, balancing his musical career with family life. When he’s not playing guitar or performing, he enjoys spending time with his children, finding inspiration and joy in fatherhood. His commitment to both his music and his family defines him as an artist with depth and dedication.
CHRISTOPHER MCKINNEY
It is no small stretch to say that Chris was born to be a drummer. His mother claims it was apparent from even in her womb, where he began working on his bass drum technique (according to her). On his second Christmas, he received his first drum set (a toy drum set) and thus began his lifelong pursuit of drums and percussion. As a young man, he played on pots, pans, and bowls in the kitchen floor, to whatever music came across the family radio. At 7, he got his first actual drum kit, and played every afternoon, even without cymbals. This fervor has been the one constant in his life. Drums and percussion are in his DNA.
After his first recoding session in his first band, he befriended the sound engineer and took on a apprenticeship role, learning all that he could about live sound and recording engineering. From there Chris took on several bands at a time and became known in the region for his versatility and ability to adapt in the moment and jump into any musical situation without rehearsal. Chris developed this skill to become a sought after “hired-gun” like many of the session players he admired (Josh Freese, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, and Jeff Porcaro just to name a few). In the earlier years, Chris was considered a stylistic chameleon, often adopting playing mechanics and chops associated with his favorite drummers to best play for each tune. Over time, he assimilated all of those chops and refined them to a more uniform and unique style that is very much his own musical identity now.
With many years of playing in many bands, projects, and several tours, Chris still dedicates himself to the pursuit of music as a drummer, percussionist, vocalist, and sound engineer as his lifelong career. It is not a job for him, simply his life. Chris co-founded Lost Highways with Andrew Ross after being bandmates in The Coming Dawn and Diamonds & Whiskey, and now longtime friends. With Lost Highways, Chris seeks to bring his favorite 90’s and other covers from other eras to the masses and share the joy of live music with anyone that can still appreciate it!
